Antidotes to Purity Culture, Fundamentalism & Shame… Hint: YOU Are the Medicine

Healing from purity culture, fundamentalism, and shame isn’t only about leaving old systems behind. It’s about coming home to yourself—your body, your voice, your wild intuition, your inner wisdom.

I love the word antidote. It feels earthy, potent, like medicine. And it fits so well.

Because purity culture, fundamentalism, and shame do operate like a sickness. A virus. They spread quietly, invade deeply, distort how we see our bodies, our worth, even our capacity to trust ourselves. And much like an illness, they leave traces in the body—patterns of fear, disconnection, and silence.

But here is the beautiful and radical truth:
You are the medicine.

Healing isn’t a one-dose cure. It’s an unfolding. A slow reweaving of body, heart and mind. It’s choosing—again and again—to listen, to move, to feel, to express. To return to yourself.

And just as poison has antidotes, so do the systems that tried to strip us from our wholeness.

🌿 Three Antidotes for Your Healing

1. Embodiment → the antidote to purity culture

Purity culture taught me that my body was dangerous. That my desires were sinful. That my instincts could not be trusted. For years, I disconnected from my body—ignoring hunger, denying pleasure, even numbing emotions—because my body felt like a source of shame.

But healing began with small moments of embodiment.
Noticing the way sunlight warmed my shoulders, the way my feet felt on the grass.
The way a deep belly breath softened my chest.
The way dancing in my living room, felt like prayer.

Each act of presence whispered: your body is not your enemy. It is your ally, your compass, your teacher.

Embodiment is reclamation. It restores the truth: your body holds wisdom.

2. Curiosity & Mystery → the antidote to fundamentalism

Fundamentalism thrives on rigid answers, black & white binaries, fear of doubt, suspicion of questions. It fears mystery.

I still remember the first time I let myself ask a forbidden question. My chest tightened, my inner voice warned, don’t go there. But when I stayed with it—didn’t rush to answer, didn’t demand certainty—something cracked open.

Curiosity became a doorway into freedom. Into wonder. Into play.

Mystery is not the enemy; it is the spaciousness where life breathes. Leaning into the grey, into unknowing, choosing curiosity is choosing liberation.

3. True Self-Expression → the antidote to shame

Shame silences. It trains us to shrink, to cover, to hide. For years, shame kept me from sharing my stories. It told me my voice was too much, too messy, too unworthy.

My healing began in secret. Writing in my journal, little poems, fragments of my heart—just for me. Then—slowly, tenderly—I began to share with trusted friends. With each breath of truth, shame lost its grip.

Each time I spoke, wrote, or created without apology, shame lost a little more ground.

Expression is reclamation. It’s declaring, I am here. My story matters. My voice belongs.

✨ Healing in Community

Here’s what’s often left unsaid: healing doesn’t happen in isolation.

The harm was communal—it came through families, churches, systems, relationships. So too, the healing must be communal. So healing is fuller when witnessed, when held, when reflected back to us

This is why I created Rebuild & Reclaim, a group for those who have deconstructed and want to keep moving forward in healing, within community.

In this space, you can:

  • Share your story and be deeply heard

  • Practice trusting your intuition and boundaries

  • Heal wounds from purity culture in safe connection

  • Explore embodiment, curiosity, and expression together

Because something transformative happens when we gather.

Together, we become the antidote.
