listening in a new way
Just over 3 years ago, I started seeing a Bodytalk practitioner. I wanted to deepen my connection to my body, to learn to listen to my body in a new way. I hoped to continue healing and deepening self-understanding, not through my words or more talking, but instead starting with my body’s priorities.
I’ve had so many breakthroughs, so many aha moments, where I learned something about myself through the wisdom of my body. Connecting memories I’d long forgotten to the issues and suffering I was grappling with in the moment. Listening and offering space for big emotions like grief, fear, and anger to surface and be felt. Making connections between physical health concerns and the mental and emotional stress I have endured. Healing generational trauma and finding balance in my body again.
This spring, I took the leap and started my training in BodyTalk.
It feels like a natural fit with the work I’m doing in spiritual direction. Both modalities begin with listening. The practitioner's role is listening, noticing, intuiting, and asking questions, with the goal for the client to hear themselves more clearly, to trust themselves, and to believe in their innate power to heal.
Another major similarity is re-establishing the connection between our three brains (head/heart/gut). In a spiritual direction session I might ask how something feels in your heart or how you sense something in your body. The goal being a deeper sense of understanding and connection to your story. In Bodytalk, we are also working to re-establish communication between our mind, body, and emotions. Your body is designed to heal itself. When all the parts and systems of the body communicate with each other, healing happens naturally. However, stress can cause communication breakdowns, resulting in discomfort and disease. BodyTalk identifies these breakdowns and uses a light tapping technique to restore communication, helping the body to heal itself.
If you are curious to try connecting with your body in a new way, I’d love to listen;)
